Summary

Scientists are increasingly using games in diverse ways that extend beyond traditional gamification. While gamification—applying game design elements to non-game contexts—has boosted engagement in education and health, recent research explores deeper uses of games as therapeutic tools, research methods, and public health interventions. Examples include neurofeedback games for chronic pain management, card games to help autistic individuals express lived experiences, and misinformation “prebunking” games to combat vaccine myths. Additional applications span sleep improvement, cognitive aging, rehabilitation, and mental health. Together, these studies show that games can meaningfully influence behavior, understanding, and health, with future growth expected as technology and AI advance.
