Summary
Modern education faces declining student engagement, prompting interest in gamification and AI-driven personalization. Gamification can reframe learning as play, boosting motivation, persistence, and mastery through clear goals and feedback. However, when overemphasized, it risks shifting motivation from intrinsic curiosity to extrinsic competition and metrics. Generative AI offers unprecedented personalized instruction at scale, patiently adapting to learners’ needs. Yet, when combined uncritically with gamification, AI can intensify harmful quantification, reducing learning to scores and clicks. This convergence threatens education’s deeper purpose: cultivating thoughtful, autonomous individuals through slow, meaningful, and intrinsically motivated learning.
