Summary
Gaming offers more than entertainment—it can enhance cognitive skills, regulate stress, and provide insights into mental health. Max Birk, associate professor at TU/e, explores how games like Tunnel Runner and League of Legends reveal and influence mental processes such as inhibitory control. His research shows stress impairs self-regulation and that games can motivate and engage users, especially through personalized avatars. Birk advocates for interdisciplinary collaboration and global engagement in science. As chair of the TU/e Young Academy of Engineering and a member of De Jonge Akademie, he works to bridge disciplines and promote international research on games and mental health.
