Summary

The Role-Playing the Humanities event at the University of Cincinnati gathered scholars, students, and designers to explore how tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) enrich humanities education through empathy, collaboration, and experiential learning. Participants reflected on the “Heidelberg Model,” which emphasizes both play and scholarly discourse. Through sessions, live games, and informal conversations, the event showcased the pedagogical and social potential of TTRPGs for worldbuilding, historical engagement, and ethical reflection. Highlights included games like Five Hundred Year Old Vampire and Reacting to the Past, with participants emphasizing the value of embodied play in fostering agency, connection, and new directions for humanities research.
