Summary
Playful learning, while common in early childhood, has untapped potential in higher education. Engaging with objects fosters curiosity, critical thinking, social learning, and intrinsic motivation. This hands-on, multisensory approach contrasts rigid gamified methods, encouraging experimentation and flow—a deeply focused, mindful state. Especially post-pandemic, students crave more meaningful, connected learning experiences. Object-based learning promotes collaboration, enhances well-being, and revitalizes classroom dynamics. However, play must be purposeful; semi-structured environments with clear objectives ensure productive outcomes. With growing interest in playful methods and their alignment with self-determination theory, universities have an opportunity to reimagine learning spaces that are engaging, social, and transformative.
