Summary
Workplace gamification can boost engagement and productivity, but often relies too heavily on extrinsic rewards like points and competition, which may undermine collaboration and intrinsic motivation. Research shows that while gamification has short-term benefits, it can erode creativity, autonomy, and social connection if poorly designed. In contrast, playfulness—a mindset rooted in curiosity, collaboration, and joy—fosters long-term engagement, innovation, and well-being. Organizations should move beyond superficial game mechanics and cultivate genuine playfulness through social connection, creative problem-solving, and a supportive culture. Prioritizing purpose and meaningful engagement leads to more resilient, productive, and satisfied teams than gamification alone.
