Win Conditions First

(0:00 - 0:13)

Hi and welcome to Experience Points by University XP. On Experience Points, we explore different ways we can learn from games. I’m your host Dave Eng from games-based learning by University XP. Find out more at www.universityxp.com.

(0:13 - 0:28)

If I asked your learners how they win, could they answer in one sentence? Because if they can't, your design is already broken. In games, win conditions are obvious. They're clear and immediate.

(0:28 - 0:44)

You either reach the finish line, defeat the boss, or score the most points. But in learning, we often bury success under vague objectives, long descriptions, and unclear expectations. If a learner can't clearly explain how they win, then they don't know what matters.

(0:44 - 0:51)

And when that happens, motivation drops. Their effort gets scattered and progress feels random. Start by thinking about a game.

(0:51 - 0:58)

Maybe a classic like Super Mario Bros. You don't start by reading a five-paragraph objective. You move right.

(0:58 - 1:02)

You avoid enemies. You reach the flag. And that's it.

(1:02 - 1:15)

The win condition is obvious before you even understand the full system. Now compare that to most classes, courses, or training programs. You get a syllabus, a list of assignments, maybe even a set of outcomes written for accreditation.

(1:15 - 1:20)

But usually none of it for action. That's not a win condition. That's a to-do list.

(1:21 - 1:25)

And to-do lists don't always motivate. They usually just create friction. So, here's the fix.

(1:25 - 1:29)

Start with the win condition. Not the content. Not the activities.

(1:29 - 1:32)

Start with the win condition. Not understand. Not learn.

(1:33 - 1:47)

Not be familiar with. The learner and player should do something, under pressure and with a clear result. In a classroom, that might mean instead of learn negotiation skills, you replace it with you win when you successfully close a deal that meets both sides' goals.

(1:48 - 2:06)

In workplace training, instead of understand the product, replace it with you win when you can pitch the product to a client and handle objections without support. Have you noticed what changed? The learner now knows exactly what success looks like, and more importantly, what to focus on. So here's your move.

(2:06 - 2:17)

Take one lesson, one module, or one training, and rewrite the win condition in a single sentence. If it's vague, make it specific. If it's passive, make it active.

(2:17 - 2:25)

If it's unclear, make it measurable. Then test it. Ask your learners, how do you win here? If they hesitate, you've got work to do.

(2:26 - 2:32)

Win conditions aren't a detail. They're the design. Get them right, and everything else gets easier.
