Summary
Students at Thomas Edison High School in Jamaica, Queens, are using Minecraft as part of their coursework to design creative visions for New York City. Through the citywide “Battle of the Boroughs” competition, students tackle real-world challenges, such as redesigning Pier 6 in Brooklyn with sustainability and food equity in mind. The program teaches teamwork, problem-solving, coding, and game design skills. Educators say Minecraft Education helps students develop critical thinking and collaboration while exposing them to career pathways in the growing gaming industry. Coordinated with the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, the competition’s first round ends January 16, with finals in spring.
