Summary
The article reflects on complexity in video game design, inspired by playing Metroid Prime 4 Beyond. It distinguishes between “complexity” (the number of systems in a game) and “complicatedness” (how much players must mentally track). Good design manages this through information clarity, using familiar conventions to communicate mechanics intuitively. Designers must also balance information density and options density to avoid overwhelming players. Guidance systems can help but risk excessive hand-holding. The time factor matters too: turn-based games allow deeper complexity than real-time action games. Ultimately, effective design makes inherently complex systems comprehensible, blending depth, accessibility, and player enjoyment.
