Summary

The article critically examines gamification in contemporary digital culture, arguing that while gamification can enhance motivation and engagement, it is often used manipulatively in today’s attention economy. By applying game-like elements such as points, streaks, and leaderboards, platforms encourage desired behaviors while masking deeper purposes, such as data extraction and profit generation. Examples from education apps, social media, and even the military illustrate how gamification can replace meaning with “fun,” promote addiction, and contribute to dehumanization. The author calls for greater critical awareness of gamification’s ethical, social, and cultural consequences.
