Summary

Nationwide opioid overdose deaths are declining, partly due to increased naloxone (Narcan) use, but rural communities still struggle with access and response times. To improve education and intervention confidence, Illinois researchers are developing a virtual reality (VR) training app that simulates administering Narcan during an overdose. Led by Wasantha Jayawardene and supported by Illinois universities and healthcare partners, the app uses immersive technology to teach overdose recognition and response. Early feedback shows the training is realistic and emotionally impactful. Despite the high cost of VR headsets, researchers see potential in expanding access and boosting bystander intervention through serious, educational gaming.
