Summary
Two educators from the NSW Department of Education are using gamification to enhance student engagement and learning. Kelly Pfeiffer created Eco Detectives, a Minecraft-based game that teaches environmental conservation through interactive virtual ecosystems. The game, used across 24 Environmental and Zoo Education Centres, encourages students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings. Stella Ding, a teacher and scholarship recipient, researched gamification’s impact, highlighting its potential to support differentiated learning and the integration of AI for adaptive, personalized education. Both educators emphasize the power of game-based learning to foster critical thinking, collaboration, and real-world problem-solving skills in classrooms.
