Summary
A preprint study suggests that playing video games enhances cognitive abilities, such as memory, attention, and problem-solving, but does not affect mental health. In contrast, exercise (150+ minutes per week) improves mental health, reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety, but does not impact cognitive ability. The study, part of the Brain and Body project with over 2,000 participants, found that those who played video games regularly performed cognitively like younger individuals, while those who exercised met WHO recommendations had better mental health. Although self-reported data was used, the findings could inform lifestyle choices for promoting cognitive health.
