Summary
In Australia, many children, especially in First Nations communities, aren't meeting recommended physical activity levels, affecting their physical and mental health. To address this, Associate Professor Narelle Eather developed the EMU program, a school-based initiative combining Indigenous games, physical activity, and cultural education. Designed to promote mental well-being, resilience, and emotional regulation, EMU also provides professional development for teachers. A trial showed improvements in fitness, self-perception, and academic performance. With support from Port Waratah Coal Services, the program has reached 10 schools and 500 students. The goal is to expand EMU nationally, adapting it to reflect diverse Aboriginal cultures and traditions.
