Summary
Teachers across Kentucky are using tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs), like Dungeons & Dragons, to create immersive, play-based learning experiences that boost student engagement, creativity, and critical thinking. These games help students deeply understand content by placing them in active roles within historical scenarios. Studies show play-based education improves memory, motivation, and academic outcomes. In one example, 6th graders learned about ancient Egypt through a game called “Tombs & Pyramids.” Students enjoyed making choices, solving puzzles, and applying knowledge through gameplay. Educators can access AI tools and statewide resources like KyEdRPG and the upcoming “Dungeons & Desks” professional development session.
