Summary

Many young children struggle with understanding place value and two-digit calculations, key foundations for math proficiency. A multi-institutional research team is investigating whether modified number board games can enhance numeracy by encouraging children to recognize numerical patterns. Their game, organized in a 10x10 grid like a hundreds chart, highlights repeating digit patterns and prompts children to identify similarities and differences. Researchers will assess learning outcomes among 100 children ages 5–7, comparing traditional and pattern-enhanced game layouts. The study aims to refine theories on pattern-based learning and inform educational game design to better support early math development.
