Summary

A pilot study by Lancaster University found that game-based learning (GBL) is an effective way to teach adults to recognize and avoid e-commerce fraud. The "Smart E-Shopper Challenge" game outperformed traditional quizzes in raising fraud awareness, with participants scoring 86.7% versus 79.2%. The game used interactive elements like threat cards and missions to simulate real-world scam scenarios. Participants reported increased knowledge and intent to shop safely online. Despite some technical issues, most found the game engaging and informative. The study suggests GBL could be a promising, cost-effective alternative to traditional cybersecurity education and supports global fraud prevention efforts.
