Summary

Mariyel Hiyas Liwanag, Assistant Professor at UPLB and Director of its Learning Resource Center, developed Isabuhay, a tabletop game promoting awareness of Philippine native languages. Based on her Ph.D. dissertation at De La Salle University, the game won the Gawad Julian Cruz Balmaceda award and a ₱100,000 prize. Isabuhay involves four team roles—teacher, researcher, agency representative, and language promoter—working together to preserve endangered languages. Drawing on game theory, collaborative learning, and language preservation, the game features event cards based on real historical and social challenges. Liwanag is currently working to secure copyright for the game in collaboration with UPLB.
