Summary
Mansfield Elementary School in northeastern Connecticut reopened in 2023–24 with a focus on joy and guided play, aligning with new state legislation reintegrating play-based learning in early grades. Principal Kate McCoy and teachers intentionally wove play into academics to counter years of increased rigor, testing, and reduced imaginative learning. Supported by professional development and union collaboration, educators report higher engagement, curiosity, and reduced student anxiety. Playful approaches to literacy, math, and science helped students grasp complex concepts while building confidence. Early results show strong academic performance, with Mansfield outperforming state averages and earning School of Distinction recognition.
