Summary
Game-based learning (GBL) uses games or game-like elements to engage learners and enhance motivation, promoting knowledge retention. It combines digital games, simulations, board games, and role-playing scenarios to teach concepts, develop skills, and foster critical thinking. Rooted in constructivism and experiential learning, GBL allows active engagement and learning through trial and error. Its rise in popularity is driven by technological advances, with games like Minecraft: Education Edition and Duolingo making learning interactive. While GBL enhances engagement and offers personalized learning, challenges include technology access, screen time concerns, and the need for high-quality game design.
