Summary
A systematic review and meta-analysis published in JAMA Pediatrics suggests that gamified digital mental health interventions may effectively treat children and adolescents with depression and ADHD. The analysis included 27 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with 2,911 participants. Results indicated moderate benefits in reducing depression (Hedges g = 0.28) and ADHD severity (Hedges g = 0.28), but minimal impact on anxiety (Hedges g = 0.07). Moderator analyses showed stronger effects for interventions targeting ADHD delivered on computers and depression treatments with preset time limits. Despite these findings, the study highlights the need for further research on moderators and adverse effects.
