Summary

Sir Demis Hassabis, Britain’s latest Nobel laureate in chemistry, began his tech career as a teenage video game developer, co-designing the 1994 hit Theme Park. He later earned a double first in computer science from Cambridge, founded a video game company, completed a PhD in cognitive neuroscience, and co-founded DeepMind, an AI startup bought by Google for £400m in 2014. As CEO of Google DeepMind, he led breakthroughs in AI, including AlphaFold, which predicts protein structures. Despite concerns about AI’s risks, Hassabis believes in its positive potential, exemplified by its medical and scientific applications.
