Summary
Cyrus Peñarroyo, an assistant professor of architecture at the University of Michigan, uses digital media to fuel imagination and civic engagement. He co-developed Holding Pattern, an augmented reality board game that teaches players about the redevelopment of vacant buildings in Cincinnati. Players assume roles like developers or city officials and progress through stages of urban reuse. Inspired by a Detroit workshop, the game combines interactive learning with digital visualization to help communities understand redevelopment processes. Peñarroyo aims to use games to engage more people in architectural design. The project has gained interest from urban leaders and will be presented at a land bank conference.
