Summary

UNESCO launched an innovative environmental education initiative at the Ranong Mangrove Forest Research Center in Thailand, combining augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) to teach students about marine ecosystems. Along a two-kilometre mangrove trail, 20 AR-enabled signboards illustrate tidal movements, mangrove biodiversity, and ancient marine life. A VR Diving Library further immerses learners in underwater environments. Developed with national partners and supported by UNIQLO, the project blends digital tools, field learning, and community knowledge to foster ocean literacy, inspire youth stewardship, and strengthen long-term conservation of Southeast Asia’s coastal heritage.
