Summary

Researchers at UC Santa Cruz and partner institutions have developed simulation games like Firewise Residents to help communities prepare for wildfires. These games confront players with difficult evacuation decisions, fostering awareness and dialogue. Developed through community collaboration and expert input, the mobile and VR games address real-world challenges, including go-bag packing and home fireproofing. The goal is to promote individual preparedness and collective resilience. Researchers assess impact through player conversations and behavior changes. The games are being tested in schools, fire councils, and even internationally. VR versions are also being integrated into campus fire training to increase engagement and retention.
