Summary
War games are often misunderstood as predictive tools, but they are designed to help military planners explore complex problems, not predict outcomes. Using a Chinese invasion of Taiwan as a backdrop, these simulations expose weaknesses in U.S. defense strategies, technology gaps, and adversary capabilities. While victory or defeat isn’t the goal, analyzing failures provides invaluable insights into areas for improvement, such as logistics and deterrence. Acknowledging and learning from failure, as emphasized by U.S. military leaders, is crucial for advancing military readiness. Ultimately, war games reveal what needs attention, driving progress and enhancing the U.S. military’s effectiveness in future conflicts.
